IVBEC, Bill Lauto, International Vincentian Business Ethics Conference, UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, Climate Change, Sustainable Living, Climate Change and Environmental Quicksand2018 IVBEC in New York City
I am happy to share information about a paper submission I made earlier this year that was accepted for presentation at the 25th Anniversary of the International Vincentian Business Ethics Conference (IVBEC). With submissions hailing from around the world, I am humbled and honored to be selected as one of the speakers for this event that will be occurring at the end of this October in New York City, USA.

The IVBEC is acutely aware of the 2030 deadline to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The IVBEC focused this conference's theme on how progress and prosperity in business are achieved in the context of a sustainable future for the planet and all who inhabit it. With research, practice, and educators attending to the responsible management of business, the conference will feature work that highlights the progress made in achieving global development goals and the challenges that remain in institutionalizing them.

My work presents facts that drive positive change in ethical business practices, individual lifestyles and sustainable living approaches that can lead to achievable goals, while addressing serious concerns in the “climate change narrative” being put out by the media as well as the scientific and environmental community. Climate Change and Environmental Quicksand addresses how recent approaches in this narrative contributes to continued greed within the political institutions that often drive the business community, or visa versa. I will post additional blogs about this conference and the new theory I present in my work that may show a key contributing element to changes in our climate that has been ignored do to over zealous money making approaches from both sides of the coin.

The evidence available, mandates each of us as individuals to be responsible and hold a strong stewardship toward God’s Green Earth. No individual, no matter the circumstance, should live a life that puts our future at risk. There are a conglomerate of solutions available on these topics. Living a more Sustainable life does the opposite of what most people think. We save money, energy, environment, by living a more sustainable life. Sustainable living has reasonable and amazing paybacks on investments when implemented correctly. Money is saved and so is our environment. In addition, we are happier and healthier, while making no sacrifices to the lifestyle we know.

For more information about my presentation at the IVBEC, please visit my Speaking Engagements page and scroll down. Thank you.

Solving The Individual

Solving The Individual

(What Earth Day Should Be About)

the thinker, earth day, going green, going true green, saving energy, sustainability, global warming, climate change, sustainable, composting, air, oil, gas, water
Accountability for each of us as an individual has become the casualty of the current Environmental Movement from both sides of the spectrum. When I was young, we were learning about doing something as an individual to help with the environmental movement. Today we have many names, Global Warming, Climate Change, and Sustainability. Unfortunately with the changing names, so did accountability change. We as individuals no longer accept blame, we no longer take the time to learn how to make a significant change to help our world. We blame the other side, we accuse the other to be the enemy or we expect a government to save the day with mandates. We as an individual have become faultless and we as individuals have become the problem.

When I was young I had a lasting impression made on me by a television commercial. I will never forget the tear coming down the face of the actor who represented Native Americans after viewing the ways people littered upon the water and land from his canoe. The elements were multi-leveled and yet the message was very simple: We as an individual can make the difference.

I know this to be true because my own actions over the past thirty years are slowly, but surely, directing me to Going True Green someday. I spent the time learning, presenting and implementing solutions. Everyday solutions for individuals that range from Basement to Attic, from Appliances to Water Use, from Composting to Recycling, from Photovoltaic Solar Cells to Geothermal, from foregoing what is in vogue to taking the right actions as individuals. The end result saves us all Money, Energy, Water, Air, our Health, and our world's environment. All while living happier and without any sacrifices.

When as an individual we make a difference in our own home, we can then take those solutions to our workplace and eventually set the examples for governments to follow. Sadly this is no longer taking place to any great extent. Some of us may focus on one objective such as installing solar panels or changing incandescent light bulbs to LEDs.  While this is productive, one or two elements is not the complete topic. We may have challenged ourselves to accomplish one project so we may feel less guilty, but we fail to understand the complete picture. Today we have the two extreme sides guilty of the same fault. A well known business person may take steps to protect money being made by claiming there isn’t anything to worry about because Climate Change isn’t real. While on the other side we see well known individuals making money with various media presentations by claiming the sky is falling. Both sides are being irresponsible because they have one thing in common: Greed.

This leaves us without all the facts and we easily deviate from the truth. Either extreme only instills fear; and fear cripples all critical cognitive thinking, responsibility, progress and solutions. We as an individual will make the difference when we become accountable and learn all the solutions we can do for each topic element, instead of focusing on just one issue or one type of argument. Pope Francis described the results of these acts in one sentence, “The external deserts in the world are growing, because the internal deserts have become so vast.”

So this Earth Day, ask yourself what have YOU done to save MONEY by reducing consumption of: Electricity, Oil, Gas, Water, Air, Plastic, Fertilizers, Weed Killers, Paper, Trees and our world's environment? What have you done to understand all the elements involved with the furniture, appliances and clothes in your possession? What kind of soap do you use and how many chemicals are under your sink when vinegar or lemon juice accomplishes the same objective? How much
Garbage do you put to the curb and how much do you really Recycle? Every aspect of our lives, every decision is yours and only yours. All this sustainable living is accomplished while being happier, healthier and without making any sacrifices. We are all one team as an individual, period.

Earth Day is a teaching moment and should be about solutions for us as individuals. Nevertheless, if we don’t solve ourselves first, then humankind will never solve anything.

Below are a few images from when I was in Rome lecturing and speaking about Sustainability as well as Climate Change. My lecture and discussions covered facts about Climate Change that shows how the two opposite sides have taken various approaches to issues while being guilty of the same fault. I spoke about additional issues that are not being addressed seriously. I presented a personal theory, (that has yet to be studied or evaluated) which can be a major factor with Climate Change and future health issues for us all.

Nevertheless, I spent the majority of the time presenting solutions. Everyday solutions for individuals and complete solutions for corporations. These solutions range from Basement to Attic, from Appliances to Water Use, from Composting to Recycling, from Photovoltaic Solar Cells to Geothermal, from foregoing what is in vogue to taking the right actions as individuals. The end result saves us all Money, Energy, Water, Air, our Health, and our world's environment. All while living happier and without any sacrifices. I cited my own actions over the past thirty years that are slowly, but surely, directing me to Going True Green someday.

Having a positive stewardship to our world and ourselves has no negative pitfalls. I had previously posted some blogs on Stewardship (June 4th and June 13, 2013 for example) and will continue to do so in the future.

At this time I extend a gracious thank you to Father Rafael Pascual, LC and Rectory Father Jesús Villagrasa, LC at the Pontifical Regina Apostolorum, Institute of Science and Faith's Masters program. Their invitation for me to speak at their week long
lecture series dealing with the biotechnology and bioethical questions of Climate Change is an experience I will always cherish.

I also extend my thanks to Father Robert Blyman, MD who is both a medical doctor and psychiatrist at the North American College in Rome. His invitation to attend Sunday mass, followed by a brunch with him and the seminarians was a blessing. At brunch, conversations abounded about sharing realistic sustainable solutions not only for our own families, friends, and workplaces, but also for the world's environment.

Finally, I must thank all the seminarians, Brothers, Sisters, professors  and guests, at both institutions for allowing me an audience. Their spirits, enthusiastic approach and smiles are inspiring. These young people bring hope to our world.

Climate Change, Institute of Science and Faith, Father Pascual, Sustainability, Bill Lauto, Going Green, Pontificio Regina ApostolorumPoster About My Lecture
My destination was the Athenaeum Pontificio Regina Apostolorum, Institute of Science and Faith in Rome, Italy. I would be presenting a 90 minute lecture on the first day of a lecture series dealing with the biotechnology and bioethical questions of Climate Change. My objective was to present all the facts and a long list of sustainable solutions as a moral responsibility for all of us.

Father Pascual already forwarded the poster they printed up for my lecture and since I was speaking on the day that I arrived, most advice received told me to stay awake. "Do not take a nap before the lecture," was the prevailing advice.

So after waking up Monday morning, leaving late afternoon, flying all night (and not sleeping), arrive 7am Rome time, head to the hotel, wait for the room to be ready, have a light meal, shower and dress for the lecture, arrive at the Pontificio Regina Apostolorum at 4pm, met the logistic coordinator who introduced me to a few sisters and seminarians, HIT THE WALL at 4:30pm, had a double espresso in the cafeteria, met the translator, set up for the camera and audience, present my lecture at 5:30pm, then answer questions, meet priests, seminarians and other attending professors, receive a private tour of the Shroud Research Center at the Institute with Father Pascual, exchange buona nottes and ciao, head back to the hotel to fall fast asleep after 33 hours being awake... the event was amazing!

Bill Lauto, Pontificio Regina, Climate Change, Father Pascual, Vatican's Universities, Going True Green, Institute of Science and Faith, Pontificio Regina Apostolorum
At the Pontificio Regina Apostolorum, just before I HIT THE Wall... Espresso please!
This was an amazing experience because of all the young men and women I had the chance to meet. They were filled with life and absorbed the information so they can share details with whoever they meet throughout their life! They were from around the world: Italy, Ireland, Mexico, India, the Middle East, South America and African Countries to name a few. All these young sisters and seminarians I met spoke multiple languages and are dedicating their lives in service for others.

In turn, what I shared with them, they will use to teach environmental, energy, and money saving actions that help us all live happier and healthier. Actions that can be used by their families, friends, schools, hospitals, churches, parishioners and whoever they meet in life. Actions that do not cause us to make sacrifices, but help us hold a moral responsibility and stewardship toward God's Green Earth.

I have been receiving emails from these seminarians thanking me and I am truly grateful. However, I am the one who is thankful for them.

Springtime in February

Climate Change, Global Warming, Greenhouse, Greenhouse effect, going green, sustainability, going true green, winter 2017, blizzard 2017, snow storms, warm February, warm winters
Recent warm temperatures in the New York City area this past February and early March has brought upon me a wave of questions from followers of my Going True Green Blog and website. Snow one day, near 70 degrees the next, and now a blizzard, can easily make many people concern with understanding what these type of weather patterns actually mean.

Since I don't want to add any fuel to the fire of misconceptions by using verbiage that can be misconstrued, I contacted Dr. Stephen Schwartz at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) for additional insight. Dr. Schwartz is the Senior Scientist for BNL's Environmental and Climate Sciences Department.

Dr. Schwartz, Brookhaven National Lab, Climate, Climate Science, Environment, global warming, greenhouse, greenhouse effectDr. Schwartz
I told Dr. Schwartz that several people from the Northeast were asking if the warm temperatures they were experiencing ever occurred in February before and if this was a direct result of climate change?

"Hard to attribute specific events (warm seasons or extreme events) to a particular cause given inherent variability associated with climate." Dr. Schwartz presented. "But temperature seems to be inexorably rising. Still, we had quite low temps here two winters ago while much of
Northern Hemisphere was near the record high, a consequence of location of loops on Jet Stream. So no climatologist will draw conclusions from one or a few seasons. That said the record high global temps in 2015 and 2016 are consistent with warming expected from increases in GreenHouse Gasses."

Another question was about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) allegedly altering numbers to support a Climate Change narrative. Dr. Schwartz stated, "No evidence that NOAA is manipulating data to achieve a political objective. Always hard to prove a negative. But analyses of temperature data by several groups all coincide closely."

Many times, I have experienced these type of generalized questions only leading to a debate on who should we blame. For me, the Blame Game is useless. We don't know definitely what outcome will come upon us from a changing climate or warmer ocean temperatures. We also do not know the time frame for when something bad or good will occur. Needless to say, a good or bad outcome, does not matter. The bottom line is this: With what we do know about our planet's climate there should not be a single company or individual in our world, that would want to RISK our children's future. This is the reason why at GoingTrueGreen.com, we teach everyone how to live a more sustainable life! The reasons for doing so are not based on fear or blithe, they are because of the following:

- You save MONEY, lots of money.
- You save ENERGY, thus saving more Money.
- Improve your HEALTH.
- Improve our ENVIRONMENT and yes, perhaps save the world.

Everyone can accomplish all of the above without any sacrifice to the lifestyle known. If you peruse some of my blog posts, you will soon learn my own firsthand accounts and how saving Money, Energy, Health, and our Environment is personally satisfying and financially rewarding.

Fuel Cell Breakthroughs

How would you like to own a car or ride a bus that operates 100% with a hydrogen fuel cell? Just announced news from chemists at the U.S, Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory presents that possibility as sooner rather than later.

My personal dream of a vehicle operating completely off of a safe, efficient, and affordable hydrogen fuel cell is one that separates hydrogen from water held in a tank instead of gasoline. The complete process occurs onboard as needed and the electricity necessary to initiate the process will be from solar panels built into the roof of the car along with a small backup storage battery. Byproduct: water vapor.

Think about this, a car that runs on water that you can collect for free from your roof, electricity made for free from the sun, no storage of hydrogen for safety, and drive long distances without gasoline, oil, fumes, smoke, noise, or pollution. That has been my "environmentally friendly dream car" since 1981 when I learned about NASA using 3 fuel cells aboard the space shuttle for all the shuttle’s power needs. Two of the three fuel cells were backups.

The above possibility may now be closer to reality than ever before, because of the research conducted at the DOE Brookhaven National Lab.

The issue with fuel cells is the current high cost to manufacture and operate. While NASA’s budget was able to handle the expense, the average car owner will never be able to afford this. Nevertheless, this vexing issue now has answers from the scientists at the DOE Brookhaven National Lab, but transferring these new breakthroughs from the lab to the road is another issue. Enter, Brookhaven’s Technology Transfer Office. They were able to secure funding for further research on the projects developing their innovative catalysts and fuel cell processes. Final step, find a partnership with automotive manufacturers to help run tests.

Elon Musk, I am sure you know about this research, but will you be involved with the testing? General Motors and Toyota are two companies collaborating with the researchers for years.

In addition to private investments to test, the scientists at DOE Brookhaven National Lab will also collaborate with Los Alamos National Laboratory for feedback on their work. If this work is approved in the testing and by consumers, future investors can step in to take Brookhaven’s team work out onto the blacktop for commercialization.

Now for the details:

Brookhaven National lab, brookhaven national laboratory, fuel cell, fuel cells, fuel cell cars, space shuttle fuel cells, elon musk, general motors, tesla, doe, department of energy, catalytic, catalysts, tungsten-nickel core catalysts, catalytic electrodes, platinum, going green, going true green, bill lautoBrookhaven National Lab
The scientists at DOE Brookhaven National Lab found the most costly part of a fuel cell were the catalysts made of platinum. This expensive metal is found in jewelry. Solid platinum catalysts have problems in tandem. In addition to the expense, they are highly corrosive and less efficient.

This dilemma has been solved by making catalysts use tiny nanoparticles of less expensive metals and surround them with thin platinum shell. Corrosion caused by the highly acidic results of chemical reactions within the fuel cell are decreased significantly, efficiency is improved and the costs is reduced when buying, repairing, or with a replacement.

Also a new method of development for making tungsten-nickel core catalysts has been presented. This method combines several steps of the manufacturing process to simplified electrode production. It reduces the cost of manufacturing electrodes with a semi-automated electrodeposition technique for the catalytic electrodes.

Team work, isn’t it amazing? Now only if we can get Washington to understand the concept that when you work alone for all the credit, everything goes wrong.

A U.S. Energy Plan; 2001

I wrote an article called, A U.S. Energy Plan, in December of 2000. The article provided some sound advice, facts and recommendations for our country’s energy plan. Then on May 30, 2001, I published this article as my first Blog on my EnergyHotwire.com website. This was before Blogs became really popular and before I knew html coding to post comments automatically. Nevertheless, I still have email comments that I received. Here are some comments from Yesteryear by two long-time followers since my first Blog post:

June, 2001:
I just read on your web site your U. S. Energy Plan and I was amazed at the facts about nuclear waste and how much energy we can save. Intelligently written and powerfully executed. A brilliant plan. Now only if our government leaders would read this.

Waterless Lawns

Water, Drought, Southern California drought, California drought, water shortages, Los Angeles, saving water, rain barrels, rock gardens, waterless lawnsA Waterless Lawn
Several GoingTrueGreen.com followers have been asking me about the wave hitting the West Coast to combat the water drought in Southern California. That wave of improvisation is known as Waterless Rock Gardens or Rock Lawns. After all, to use clean fresh drinking water for your grass lawn just doesn't make sense in a severe drought. At least this makes sense to all the households in Los Angeles where income doesn't afford watering lawns. Those lawns are now all brown.

The reason for not watering is because there isn't enough water. Yet, if that isn't reason enough, there are higher water costs and fines to endure. For the average and low income families, that is all understood. However, in towns such as Pacific Palisades, Beverly Hills, and Bel Air, those lawns have been "green" the longest according to local news papers. Some of the very people maintaining lush green lawns for as long as they can in this devastating drought, are financially secured celebrities that many low income kids look up to. Some reports have claimed that well known and very vocal environment friendly celebs, are the most heinous offenders! Only after being identified and embarrassed did they take steps to save clean drinking water.

Water, Drought, Southern California drought, California drought, water shortages, Los Angeles, saving water, rain barrels, rock gardens, waterless lawns, rain barrels, rain rocksRain Barrel
Now taking steps to save water was made very easy by the state and cities of California. Four years ago they offered lawn owners $1.50 per square foot to replace your lawn. These tax credits had Los Angeles homeowners, along with commercial businesses, pulling out a million and a half square feet of grass. The grass has been replaced with rocks, vines, trees, shrubs, gravel, cacti, succulents, and perennial plants. Homeowners earned even more money from the utilities if they used drip irrigation, weather over-ride systems, and eco-friendly sprinkler heads. I even suggest catching rain water off your roof with Rain Barrels. For more of my blogs on this subject visit More Garden, Less Lawn.

Recently the L.A.'s DWP, Department of Water and Power, increased the amount from $1.50 to $2.00 per square foot for grass removed so even more water can be saved. At that rebate price, some land owners could make one or two thousand dollars. However, before you run out to buy rocks and tear up your lawn, you have to follow set rules. You can find details on your local town or city website. Such as the LADWP, (Los Angeles Department of Water and Power), website for how to get pre-approval to present before and after proof. Without following the rules for proposed changes, you may not receive any rebate or tax credit.

All of us must take water saving steps, drought or no drought. The reasons are many and one is because clean drinking water has already become hard to find in many places around the world. A topic that I address in my first Online Workshop which is about WATER.

EARTH's Future

Brookhaven National Lab, Dr. Schwartz, DOE, Atmospheric research, sigma pi sigma, st. John's University, climate change, green house effect, global warmingDr. Schwartz
Earth Day 2016, has a population of over seven billion humans and we are all using more energy than ever before. We had nine of the ten hottest years recorded in the last fifteen years. Our oceans are more acidic than ever recorded and our atmosphere has unprecedented amounts of carbon dioxide.

My previous Going True Green blog stated that this post will be about America's Future. The other week I spoke to several students at Sigma Pi Sigma's induction ceremony for the Physics department at St. John's University. Students who will be part of our world's future and solutions. While I was one of three invited speakers, the Key Note speaker was Dr. Stephen Schwartz, a senior scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory and principal investigator in the Department of Energy Atmospheric System Research Program. His research centers on the influences of energy related emissions on our climate.

Dr. Schwartz's presentation provided facts on how our energy consumption is connected to climate change and he was an excellent catalyst for the attending students to start thinking anew. Afterwards when I spoke, I
provided some initial steps that implement energy saving solutions to reduce our energy consumption and without sacrifice.

Dr. Schwartz invited me to Brookhaven National Lab to attend his colleague Ernie Lewis' lecture about "What Will Earth Be Like In 50 Years?" With data and developing models of Earth's complex climate systems from Brookhaven Lab's Environmental & Climate Sciences Department, Ernie Lewis first took us back in time 50 years. In the 1960s City skylines disappeared in smog, rivers were polluted and America's eagle was almost wiped out. Nevertheless, our team work brought about solutions and recovery. Lessons we need today to face the world wide challenges of tomorrow.

America's Best ?

4/8/2016

I remember when there was a gasoline shortage, not once, but twice in the same decade. Energy supply, economics and our environment started to enter the minds of several Americans. As an Environmental Studies Major, I knew in reality everything was and is connected.

I was incensed by the fact that ten short years earlier America's team at NASA was able to have humans walk on the surface of the moon and bring them all home safe again, but after that second gasoline shortage answers to the "energy crisis" came through stickers. Team work became a thing of the past and for everyone too young to remember, here is an example of America's Best team effort to save energy:
going green, gas shortage, gasoline, gasoline shortage, saving energy, conserve, conservation, how to lower electric bills, how to save energy, sustainability, sustainable lifestyle, climate change, green house effect, global warming, president carter, space shuttle, nasa, heating, saving on heating bills, gas bills
I saved these stickers all these years, because I knew one day they would be really useful.
The only effort America had that came close to teamwork, was a move to conserve, but that conservation move was all about sacrificing. We were told to put on a sweater and lower the thermostat to decrease the amount of heat used in our home and put a sticker on the wall with a cleaver saying like:

"DON'T SHOWER BY THE HOUR!"
(To save on the fuel used to make the hot water)
"TO SAVE MORE, DRY DISHES WITH AN OPEN DOOR!"
(To save with Dish Washers and not run the electric heating elements to create hot air for drying the dishes)
"SET AIR CONDITIONER AT 78! DON'T USE IN AFTERNOON!"
(Yeah, right)
"LIGHT NOT NEEDED? TURN ME OFF!"
(Because they couldn't do a rhyme with: Shut The Light Switch, You Wasteful %!¶@#!)
"FOGGY HEAD STAY IN BED, SHUT THE DOOR!"
(To save by shutting your refrigerator door, not the dish washer door that you left open to dry the dishes and tripped over when you went into the dark kitchen for that midnight snack.)

These stickers stated one word: "sacrifice," a tough sell to the American consumer because our lifestyle had to change. These "marketing steps" were a failure simply because they didn't embrace or set out to solve the issues with new technology that were already becoming available. Sadly, these are still the conservation steps many think are necessary to save energy today.

My next GoingTrueGreen blog post will be about America's Future.
The other week I spoke to several students at Sigma Pi Sigma's induction ceremony for the Physics department at St. John's University. Students who will be part of our world's future and solutions. When speaking to them the other night, I provided them with a starter list of initial steps so they can be the catalyst for thinking anew... So solutions can be implemented that will, in fact make a great difference.

    Bill Lauto
    Environmental Science and Energy Consultant

    Bill Lauto, Environmentalist, Energy Consultant
Bill Lauto came on the scene in 1981 to present facts and teach details about how we can save our environment without making  sacrifices. He demonstrated how correctly implementing the technology we already obtained in 1981, allowed us to save Money, Energy and Earth. He voice was one among the few who taught green facts long before anyone else talked about sustainability.
       Bill Lauto's Credentials
By 1994 the Internet was being explored as a tool to provide energy saving information to all of America by Mr. Lauto. Having the foresight, he first launched the Light Bulb HotLine web site off of the company's Domain in 1996. Then in April of 2001, EnergyHotwire became a resource. Today,
GoingTrueGreen.com presents decades of info to dispel mis-information and provide the facts about truly Going True Green.
