Interview with Environmentalist Bill Lauto
Bachelor of Science: Environmental Studies; St. John's University
International Sustainability and Energy Consultant, Naturalist and Entrepreneur
Some insight for tomorrow's Environmental and Earth Science students:
Questions are posed to Bill Lauto by Professor Nieter, the Assistant Dean of St. John's College at St. John's University, New York: 2012
What have you been doing since you graduated?
I have been blessed with family, friends, and the wish to make a difference. With this foundation I have been working as an Environmental Energy Consultant, Speaker, and entrepreneur. I also teach part time at BOCES Outdoor Environmental Education programs. Prior to this, I managed the Consumer Energy Specialist department for Long Island Lighting Co., worked with North American Philips Corp., and at Hempstead’s Resource Recovery Plant.
How did you successfully land your first job?
In 1979 the economy was on a downward turn, I searched the Help Wanted ads in three different newspapers (today you would use the web) and I began my job hunting about two months before graduation. In July of that summer I received a position with a new facility that converted household garbage into electricity. I had an Environmental Energy Specialist, Level Two position when the plant closed down just over one year later due to politics, unions, and money.
What sorts of professional development and experiences have helped you in your career?
Over the years I attended classes, seminars and conferences such as: Customer Service, Office and Employee Management, Sensitivity Training, Interview Training, Communication Skills, Team Building, and Survival. I volunteered and received approval to be the Energy Advisor to the Earth Day Committee in New York City during the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day. This opened the door for me to be the expert witness at press conferences for former New York’s Major Dinkins and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Mark Green. I worked with the media professionally and they repeatedly invited me to speak on several television news and radio talk shows as the Environmental Energy expert. I personally conducted thousands of Energy Audits for businesses, organizations, celebrities, and homeowners, where listening to their situations has granted me a unique insight to our country’s environmental and energy policies.
Have you continued your education after leaving St. John's University?
Yes, I did and I am still continuing, because we never stop learning and collecting all the facts. Currently I have the following:
MS Science and Faith; at Pontificio University Regina Apostolorum in Rome
Energy Auditor Certification from New York Institute of Technology
Thermal Heating Certification from S.U.N.Y. at Farmingdale
Certification in Team Building, Survival Training and Communication Skills, from NYS Board of Cooperative Educational Services
Certification in Homeland Security and Emergency Services, Citizen Preparedness
Also I attended numerous Advance Educational Seminars on: Efficiency Management, Employee Relations, Sensitivity Training, Customer Relations, Team Building, Team Work, Communications, Survival Classes, Office Management, Staff Management.

What sort of work are you doing now?
I operate my own Environmental and Energy Consulting company. Also through several mediums I present an educational platform online that teaches everyone about saving energy, money, and our Earth. I am currently presenting and speaking at several venues. My speaking engagements range from International venues in Europe to Conference in Washington, DC. I have also spoken to students, businesses, and organizations' members. Online I have been operating an energy saving website since 1995. In April 2001, the website’s name became EnergyHotwire.com (EHW). Then on Earth Day 2013, we launched GoingTrueGreen.com (GTG) with my Blog. We have been slowly transitioning from EHW to GTG that also has Quick Videos, OnLine Classes, and CheckLists, for GTG Members. I hold Trademarks and Patents here in the United States and Internationally on environmental and energy related items. I am also looking forward to publishing a book that I am currently writing titled: PLASTIC CLOUDS.

In your area of field what are the job prospects like now and in the future?
Environmental and energy auditors are still in demand and will be as long as people have high energy bills to pay or are worried about serious environmental health issues. Nevertheless, before taking a position in this field, realize the main objective or goal of your employer. This can be the difference from you helping others, compared to being a contributing cog for a ruse that only has the goal of making money.
Do you have any particular advice for students in the environmental program who will graduate in the near future?
Never burn bridges, keep in touch with your professors and colleagues, which is much easier to do in today’s world of Social Media. You can never know when a contact from years gone by, can prove so helpful in the future. Networking is key, stay positive and keep God within you. Never do anything just for money. Make a positive difference.
If you are an organization, university, non-profit, business, corporation, or a government department, please email anytime for additional information on availability and fees. Our presentations support excellent relations for members, employees, students and the public. For more Information please visit our Speaking Engagement page. Thank you.
