Kiplinger's Hardcopy Magazine, 1992

I have been writing articles or provided energy saving data for various publications doing a section or column on energy savings. One such publication was Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine in April of 1992. The energy saving light bulb data I provided in my interview with Kiplinger's Associate Editor Sherry Harowitz, became a small section titled:
Lights That Lighten Your Electric Bill

The published piece was so popular that I received 95 phone calls from around the country the first day Kiplinger's magazine hit the newsstands. Below are some of the questions I received:

- Where can I buy these energy saving fluorescent light bulbs locally?
- How do I obtain accurate numbers as to what I will save on my utility's electric bill?
- What are my financial advantages to changing all the light bulbs in my house?

People are hungry for information and facts. Details are always needed to make an informed decision. I wrote a letter to my editor asking about doing a followup where we can provide additional data, such as the formula to calculate one's electric savings. Education and team work is the best way to save money, energy and earth, without making lifestyle sacrifices.

The Associated Press picked up a brief article I wrote on energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs and the AP's release was picked up by many Sunday morning newspapers. Under newspaper sections such as: Money Clips my article ran with the title,

Change just four incandescent light bulbs in your house to energy-efficient fluorescent bulbs and you'll lower your electricity bill by about $100 a year (assuming you have an average-size home and pay 14 cents per kilowatt hour). Your savings include the cost of the bulbs - which average a stiff $20 each but last three to four years.

Since they are expensive, they're best suited for kitchens, dens and other high-use areas and for rooms in which lights are on at least four hours a day. If you use fluorescent bulbs that are designed for outside use, they must be in acovered light fixture. Exposure to weather can cause them to burn out early.

You may have trouble finding the type and size of fluorescent bulbs you need because those stocked by some utility companies and stores don't fit standard lamps. Consumers who have trouble finding bulbs can call B and B Ventures (1-516-822-2858). The company sells bulbs and can also direct you to other mail-order sources.
