Equivocator In The Attic

3/31/2017

insulation, attics, vapor barrier, mold, mildew, heat loss, the rub, God's Green Earth, Going True Green, True Story, Going GreenAttics come in all shapes and sizes
Unbeknownst to you, if a silent threat lurked in your attic, would you not take swift action once you have learned of the threat?

Yet, that is the Rub when the threat is from an equivocator who used ambiguous language to deceive you. You can't take any action if you never learn the truth about the lie told to you. Nonetheless, year after year the lie costs you more and more money. That is the situation when attic insulation is done incorrectly. At times, the errors with attic insulation made by professional contractors, handymen, or fly-by-night individuals, is almost an epidemic.

Below is just another TRUE story that proves we must always live by the adage: Buyer Beware

I was contacted by an attorney for a couple looking to buy a house. Their engineer's report came back stating that the insulation in the attic was installed upside down. The foil Vapor Barrier had to be on the floor of the attic or in other words, at the bottom of the insulation. When the Vapor Barrier is on the top of the insulation, moisture will be trapped in the insulation, thus sacrificing the integrity of the product. Mold and mildew can accumulate to the point that after so many years, the insulation has to be removed and replaced.

The couple's lawyer, who is familiar with my work, queried me on the response he was given by the current home owner's representative. Our conversation went like this:

"So Bill, he told me that the insulation was installed correctly and to code at the time the work was done so many years ago. I replied by saying, that I never heard of the Vapor Barrier being approved in a different position no matter what year it was installed."

"You are 100% correct," I answered. "They are telling you a lie, hoping that you would accept what they are saying and  that you would take no more action."

Many times we find it hard to believe what kind of world we live in. Rest assured, this world is still God's Green Earth.

Santa Cruz: Recycle After Consuming

Dear GTG Readers,

The Santa Cruz company has various comestibles for sale. While this is not an endorsement, I do wish to present a request to them via my blog. The reason is because I had emailed them over two years ago and never received any feedback. So perhaps with all my Going True Green blog readers also submitting this request with social media, we may actually see a response or implementation!

Yes, I like the fact that their juice comes in "glass" bottles, products are Organic and Non GMO verified, 100% of electricity used to make various products is offset with certified renewable energy (verify at
Green-e.org) and their California manufacturing facility has a platinum level Zero Waste certification—the highest level offered.

One morning I noticed on one of their labels the need for one additional line of directions, my original email is below:

Hello everyone at the Santa Cruz company,

As an Environmental Scientist, Energy Consultant and the President of GoingTrueGreen.com, I have enjoyed many of your products immensely. One morning while reading your label on the Santa Cruz Organic Orange Mango 100% juice I saw the following in small print by the Bar Code:

Natural separation may occur,
Shake before enjoying.
Refrigerate after opening.

This is excellent, but can you consider adding one more line to your label: " Recycle after consuming ".

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

If any reader agrees with the inclusion of my suggestion and is so incline, please add/share your request for this important addition. Thank you.

Springtime in February

Recent warm temperatures in the New York City area this past February and early March has brought upon me a wave of questions from followers of my Going True Green Blog and website. Snow one day, near 70 degrees the next, and now a blizzard, can easily make many people concern with understanding what these type of weather patterns actually mean.

Since I don't want to add any fuel to the fire of misconceptions by using verbiage that can be misconstrued, I contacted Dr. Stephen Schwartz at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) for additional insight. Dr. Schwartz is the Senior Scientist for BNL's Environmental and Climate Sciences Department.

Dr. Schwartz, Brookhaven National Lab, Climate, Climate Science, Environment, global warming, greenhouse, greenhouse effectDr. Schwartz
I told Dr. Schwartz that several people from the Northeast were asking if the warm temperatures they were experiencing ever occurred in February before and if this was a direct result of climate change?

"Hard to attribute specific events (warm seasons or extreme events) to a particular cause given inherent variability associated with climate." Dr. Schwartz presented. "But temperature seems to be inexorably rising. Still, we had quite low temps here two winters ago while much of
Northern Hemisphere was near the record high, a consequence of location of loops on Jet Stream. So no climatologist will draw conclusions from one or a few seasons. That said the record high global temps in 2015 and 2016 are consistent with warming expected from increases in GreenHouse Gasses."

Another question was about the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) allegedly altering numbers to support a Climate Change narrative. Dr. Schwartz stated, "No evidence that NOAA is manipulating data to achieve a political objective. Always hard to prove a negative. But analyses of temperature data by several groups all coincide closely."

Many times, I have experienced these type of generalized questions only leading to a debate on who should we blame. For me, the Blame Game is useless. We don't know definitely what outcome will come upon us from a changing climate or warmer ocean temperatures. We also do not know the time frame for when something bad or good will occur. Needless to say, a good or bad outcome, does not matter. The bottom line is this: With what we do know about our planet's climate there should not be a single company or individual in our world, that would want to RISK our children's future. This is the reason why at GoingTrueGreen.com, we teach everyone how to live a more sustainable life! The reasons for doing so are not based on fear or blithe, they are because of the following:

- You save MONEY, lots of money.
- You save ENERGY, thus saving more Money.
- Improve your HEALTH.
- Improve our ENVIRONMENT and yes, perhaps save the world.

Everyone can accomplish all of the above without any sacrifice to the lifestyle known. If you peruse some of my blog posts, you will soon learn my own firsthand accounts and how saving Money, Energy, Health, and our Environment is personally satisfying and financially rewarding.

Toxic Kitchen?

3/9/2017

soap, natural soap, organic soap, soap formulas, going true green, going green, sustainable living, GTG Logo SoapHomemade GTG LOGO Soap
First, let us not become overly worried, but let us review and take some action. Toxicity levels in any household kitchen can vary tremendously. People will have an assorted volume of products in the closet or under the sink. Many items are commercial products to help clean an oven, sink, drain pipes, exhaust fans, all types of floors, countertops, stainless steel appliances, dishes, and silverware.

Then we go ahead with cooking and eating with many of these items just cleaned by any possible assortment of toxic chemicals. As I have stated in previous GTG Blogs, only 3 things Do Not put toxins into our food: Glass, Porcelain, and Wax Paper. Anything else can and will leach into our food and drink. Adding extra heat or cold to many chemicals will accelerate the transfer. For example, Water inside a plastic bottle made with BPA chemicals will leach into the water faster when placed in a freezer or hot car. Now this will not harm you tomorrow, but perhaps we should look at these anomalies like smoking cigarettes.
Why RISK potential health issues later in life?

Additionally, products such as some oven cleaners are problematic when inhaled or make contact with our skin. However, health hazards are not just from oven cleaners laden with chemicals. Dish washing soaps that employ the use of sulfates in any amount should be avoided.

So what actions should we take? First read all the labels and look up the definitions to ingredients you are not familiar with or can't pronounce. Research new organic replacement products on the web and in stores. If you decide to toss a product for a natural one, that is great but DO NOT pour down the drain or flush it down the toilet! Townships have programs to collect and properly dispose of these products. We DO NOT want them going into our Waterways or back into our drinking water table in the ground!

To start everyone off on the path to no more chemicals, better health, and saving money, I have a Dish Washing Soap formula from Mary, a Going True Green Blog reader. Please realize that while this dish washing soap may not foam up as much as your previous brand, that does not mean an inferior job is being done.

For hand Dish Washing Soap, combine the following in a Glass Mason Jar:
- Six tablespoons of liquid Castile soap*
- Two tablespoons of vegetable glycerin*
- A half of dozen drops of any essential oil for aromas*
Then mix in Two cups of cold water and shake well. Also, shake before each use for best results.

* Buy in a Drugstore

As for Hand Soap, Sean another Going True Green Blog reader, sent us his hand-made soap in the shape of our Logo letters as shown above. So creativity goes hand in hand with saving Money, Health, and God's Green Earth!
