Energy Efficiency

Speaking Greenish: Part five A
With the meaning to Energy Efficiency, most focus on selling or buying a product that is energy efficient. Yet, we fail to realize that there are now many products considered energy savers, but far from energy efficient. The end result is that we, the consumers, are being sold a "Bill Of Goods" and we are being ripped off. As for our environment, once again our planet is being "used" and littered upon... Just like the trash thrown onto the feet of the actor portraying a native American in the commercial that inspired me so many years ago when I was a kid. That commercial still inspires me to this day, I know because here I am writing about it again. Please use this Link, Preface Posting or the Preface Category on the right for the commercial and my story behind all this.

I base my above statement on the very definition of the word Efficiency:
EFFICIENCY
"Achieving maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort or expense while preventing the wasteful use of a particular resource."
We have products in almost every category that claim to be energy efficient, but are in fact, very wasteful. Let us name a few examples:
- Refrigerators
- High hat fixtures with fluorescent light bulbs
- Energy Star Labels
Yes, the Energy Star Label is a product. Designed by the government to help us consumers to buy an environment and energy saving product. Yet, many people are confused by thinking the Energy Star means they are buying the best model for saving the most energy. The energy star is helpful, but the label DOES NOT automatically mean you are looking at the MOST energy efficient model made. Any appliance with an energy star means it is more efficient than an appliance without one. However, the difference between a model without the Energy Star and one that does, could be the bare minimum of energy savings. In other words, just enough to qualify for the Star. Refrigerators fall into this premise much too often. In fact, the very design of the most popular refrigerator models screams inefficiency! Placing the freezer at the bottom instead of at the top, goes against the laws of physics.

As stated in part four of Speaking Greenish... Knowledge truly is Power.
On Monday I will post part five B and present an example dealing with inefficient lighting found in homes and businesses. The  explanation shall cover how energy efficiency is not always automatic. I hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Good advice. I bought a dented model of a high end brand refrigerator cheap. It was NOT energy star. But it did fit the small and odd kitchen space I had to put it in. The dent was on a side nobody sees. However, I did some quick math on energy consumption and compared it to the Energy Star options I had.
It would cost me $7 more a year at the time. I was OK with that because, I was desperate. The old unit that came with the house was really old from Montgomery Wards and full of MOLD! Note to sellers: NEVER unplug your refrigerator, ever and if it is ancient, put a new one in as a bonus to sell the house or minus from price for credit. If a buyer, put in the contract that you want the $1200± credit on the price to replace the old one. I should have!
It has now been 5 years and, if I get two more years out of it, that would be normal for any fridge and then, I can research and buy the most efficient one for the space I can find.
BTW: Those little box fridges in hotels, or students in dorms use or university professors might have in their office use MORE power than a full size refrigerator. They were not covered under any energy efficiency programs. I think they just now are but are still very inefficient. Basically, you just don't want to use one, ever, until you see one with an Energy Star label.

Bill Lauto came on the scene in 1981 to present facts and teach details about how we can save our environment without making  sacrifices. He demonstrated how correctly implementing the technology we already obtained in 1981, allowed us to save Money, Energy and Earth. He voice was one among the few who taught green facts long before anyone else talked about sustainability.

By 1994 the Internet was being explored as a tool to provide energy saving information to all of America by Mr. Lauto. Having the foresight, he first launched the Light Bulb HotLine web site off of the company's Domain in 1996. Then in April of 2001, EnergyHotwire became a resource. Today,
GoingTrueGreen.com presents decades of info to dispel mis-information and provide the facts about truly Going True Green.
