Started in June 1972 by Maurice Strong, the headquarters is in the Gigiri neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya, there are also six regional offices and several offices in different countries. The most significant aspect of UNEP is their role in developing environmental conventions internationally and supporting the advancement of environmental science. They also implement policy and information with national governments, regional institutions in conjunction with environmental non-governmental organizations known as NGOs.
