LPS (Low Pressure Sodium) or SOX with all the features, offers lighting application specialists and field engineers much more than Mercury Vapor or High Pressure Sodium. The Bottom Line savings are tremendous as shown in the example below:
The information circling around about SOX lights using more electricity just before they burn-out, thus raising your electric costs is a half truth. Yes, SOX lights use more electricity as they get older and before they burn-out, but that is only a total of 3% more as you get an additional 3% of light output. So we are still getting what we pay for - More light output of 3% and we pay 3% more. We are even.
As far as what the future holds, I learned about Lighting Emitting Diodes (LEDs), but they are years away from coming close to the light output of a SOX or compact fluorescent bulb. We have to look at the money, energy and oil we will save now and over the next twenty years or so before a new light source can replace the best lighting systems we install today.
