At the last minute I was asked to promote the environmental classes at the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens in New York. By improvising with various recyclable items, a small pile of dirt, pieces of fruit and veggies placed on a table, I asked who wanted to be a superhero to help save the world. From 8 year olds to teenagers, the answer was, "me" or a smile with a raised hand.

First thing I showed the kids was all the items we use everyday that can be recycled. Then I showed them the pile of dirt and asked who heard about composting? A paper dish had some fruits and veggies, all compostable, but I also placed a plastic clip and masking tape on the dish. Most kids knew right away that those items would not decay away in a compost pile. Afterwards we discussed different methods and ways they could compost in their apartment or backyard so they could have rich fertile soil to help nourish any indoor flowers or plants they had growing.
"You Do Not Need A Cape To Be A Superhero!"
I was very impressed to see the Variety Boys and Girls Club in Astoria Queens offering Environmental Classes as part of their after school program. I was happy to help and to introduce Recycling along with Composting as a few small steps that kids can do to help make a more sustainable world. I also told the kid's parents that they will save money by using their own compost on their flowers and plants... No need to buy fertilizer anymore!
