How To Save Energy During The Holidays

The holidays are here and I trust we are spending time with family and friends to celebrate and honor what is really important in life. To help with saving money on the cost for the "energy side" of the holidays, this blog posting deals with cooking.

Yes, t
he very way we cook and the type of appliances we use to cook, can add to the electric and gas bills. So if you are shopping for a new stove and / or oven this season, I am sure you have several questions as to what is the best stove and oven to buy:

Should I buy a Range with a stove top & oven?

Should the stove and oven use Gas?

Electric Oven
Should the stove and oven use Electric?
What is the best type of Oven for Energy Savings? That answer usually gets over-ruled by one's personal taste. Nevertheless, before you decide on what to buy based on personal taste, please consider these basic facts and data:
...if it cost you $1.00 cooking with an electric stove,
the bill would have been as little as 25 cents with gas.
holiday cooking, christmas, culinary capitol, electric bills, gas bills, holiday season, professional chefs, save energy this holiday, how to save energy with ovens, convectional ovens, going green, goingtruegreen, going true green, natural gas, gas burners, gas stove top, convection, gas flamesWall Oven
As a general rule Wall Ovens will use more energy than a well made Range with an oven. We have not seen a Wall Oven with an Energy Star Label. However, more expensive wall ovens coming out in the future with NASA technology may change that.

Future Range and Wall ovens should be more energy efficient with the use of Intelligent technology and thermal ceramic insulation developed by NASA. This material is non-toxic and improves cooking efficiency by keeping the heat in the oven thus cooking food faster and reducing the self-clean time.
The fuel you use to heat your oven will make a difference in the energy bills. Over-all GAS will be much less than Electricity simply because of the difference in efficiency. How much of a difference? A much as 75% less for a gas stove and oven. So if it cost you $1.00 cooking with an electric stove, the bill would have been as little as 25 cents with gas. So go with gas and range design.

Six Burner Gas Stove and Oven
If you don't have gas available, then you will have to use electric. You can tell the difference by the stove tops shown in the photos.

Electric Stove Top and Oven

Three "must have" features for energy savings:

1.) A "Self-Cleaning" oven is more efficient than an oven without this feature, because self-cleaning ovens usually are better insulated.

2.) If you always open your oven door to take a look-see, then buy an oven with a window and light. This will reduce the times you would open the oven door and let heat escape.
At least 25 degrees of heat lost instantly each time you open the oven door!

Small Oven Window
Buy a small oven window.
A window with double glass to hold heat in.

Large Oven Door Window
Do NOT buy an oven with a large window door.

Oven Light
Have a light inside oven. Much easier to see food cooking inside.
3.) With Gas Stoves: An electronic ignition (piezoelectricity) will use up to 40% less gas than an oven and stove top with pilot lights.

Now if you already have Pilot lights then the burner flame on gas stoves should be BLUE, like in the photo above. If your flames are yellow in color, then clean the ports by following the Manufacturer's Instructions.

How significant is the savings by cooking with convection as opposed to conventional mode?

Hi PAL,

Now I will assume you don't have a convection oven and base my reply on that, however, if you already have a convection oven and just wanted to know how much you are saving... The answer is 10 to 20 percent. Yet, I believe it will behoove you to continue reading the extra data below:

Not sure if I would call the 10 to 20% savings “significant” between a convection oven and a conventional one. That all depends on your own definition of significant. Nevertheless, once you look at ALL the benefits from a convection oven, not just the money side, yes I would say there is a significant difference. Here is why and how:

When people get a convection oven they love them once they get use to the differences. Mainly the heat distribution with lower temperatures and faster cooking times are your biggest differences. Other differences will be found in the way your food taste, no more one side light brown and the other side over cooked. As for savings in money, you will be realizing a 10% to 20% reduction with both gas or electric ovens. Your lower cost comes from less time to cook at a lower temperature! Every minute saved is money saved, so the better you are with timing and temperature settings as well as turning off the oven, the closer you will be to the 20% savings.

Now, is a 10 to 20% savings enough to justify buying the more expensive convection oven? Yes, when you buy a convection oven "without" all the extra features that ring so entertainingly. One such extra feature that makes a convection oven much more expensive and hard to justify is one that automatically converts the temperature to make up for the difference in convection cooking. You do not need this auto adjust feature, you may want it, but you don’t need it. Just buy a convection oven (gas is much more efficient than an electric) with that small window and light bulb inside. As you know from my recent blog posting, these two features will save you additional energy and money when cooking. Get yourself adjusted to the lower temperatures and faster time by looking into the oven door’s small window and turning on the light. After seeing when your chicken is golden brown, shut the light inside the oven and note the difference in time to cook. Soon enough you will be an expert not only in cooking perfect dishes, but saving money, energy and earth.

Enjoy the holidays cooking and saving,
Bill, GTG
