Sadly, the truth is that the majority of worldly politicians and so-called news media people are hypocrites with Environmental issues and Energy realities. Most actually believe they are right, but in fact, they don’t know the complete picture. They attach themselves to power grabbing and money making narratives that in most cases, cause more harm than help.
Energy Offsets=Smoke & Mirrors? Additionally, others come into play with bragging-rights such as, “Our skyscraper will use renewable energy from…” (plug-in a location from anywhere else in that state). American corporations, Not-For-Profits, as well as other countries such as Qatar, have investments or a stake in city buildings that claim to be not-zero emissions by 2050 with hydropower facilities, wind farms, and / or solar farms. The issue with this is that they are not using the renewable energy they pay for or invested in. They are just paying for renewable energy to be made and sold to others. Thus, offsetting their consumption of energy made by oil or gas. However, they are still using electricity made from non-renewables. They may be helping to save some oil and gas, but they are not saving energy. In fact, they can't even say, that they have done no damage to the environment. This claim of an offset is from paying for or investing in renewable energy that is made for other people to buy. The skyscraper isn't using the renewable energy, other people are, like in the western or northern part of their state or have a country in South America or Africa use renewables. The skyscraper owners still want dependable energy 24/7, they don’t want a higher risk of the power going out when the wind is too strong or weak. They also don’t want to talk about all the facts, as real unpretentious environmental scientists do. Facts such as the damage done by solar farms and wind farms to the environment. Infrastructure concerns for the Grid and safety issues with construction of more high voltage power lines.
Please allow me some more of your time to explain this another way:
I was working as a consulting for an energy saving lighting project with the NY State Power Authority at their NYC office located on the 11th floor at 1 Penn Plaza. This was the first of an "Offset" narrative.
They used their own electric power from upstate Hydroelectric production. Therefore, my reports had to reflect their MUCH LOWER Kilowatt cost of ONLY .11 cents as compared to Con Ed's cost of .21 cents per kilowatt at that time. Due to these savings, the payback on my recommendations took twice as long, because they were not paying Con Ed's rates.
However, I stated to them that I did not believe the savings shown in my report would take twice as long for the payback, because they were in the same building (11th floor only) where all the other floors were paying twice as much. In order to prove their lower kilowatt rate for the 11th floor was real, I asked how they were supplying their own cheaper electricity to themselves on the 11th floor in a building supplied by Con Ed? In the middle of a city supplied by Con Ed?
Unlike a politician who would never answer that kind of question, the Head Operation Manager did answer me. "We don't." AND he laughed nervously.
I was told, “Everything is washed clean in the paperwork, as one hand washes the hand that wiped the other's you know what.”
No energy is really being saved! No carbon footprint is being reduced, only preventing some additional use of carbon based fuels and some are making a nice profit from this at the same time! Helping the climate is not the goal. Nobody is using less energy. More renewable energy is being made, so the elitists can continue using highly dependable non-renewable energy! The WASH is in the “offset” shown on paper, as cash exchanging hands for investors.
The media should be recording conversations that end in nervous laughs, instead of pitching movie making predictions. Here are just two other examples:
The media, and politicians, are telling lies by the process of omission! These lies make certain people lots of money, hurt our environment, and hurt the poor. Case and point… Many world leaders, with investors, are telling small countries in Africa, and in South American what to do when it comes to energy production because of the environment predictions they fear or love for monetize reasons. - In 2022, the media claimed numerous times, that the month of August would have the highest number of hurricanes ever recorded. The month had the lowest hurricane record in over six decades, but that positive news was never reported by the media.
- California’s coral reef being destroyed was reported, and rightfully so. However, when the highest coral reef recorded for the great barrier reefs in 36 years occurred... The media failed to share the news with the same intensity as their sky-falling predictions.
